The Zoo was created in 1999 at the Factory. The latter is one of the largest self-managed cultural centers in Europe and a bastion of alternative Geneva culture. The building houses nearly twenty associations which campaign for culture and the arts. The building welcomes several hundred thousand visitors per year while claiming self-management, accessibility and anti-consumerism. The space succeeds Debido, a popular canteen very popular in the 1990s. Many musical events were held there (although not the initial objective of the space) so much so that in 1999, the occupants of the space decided to make it a place dedicated to subcultures. electronics, dancing, while stopping selling food. The Zoo has the particularity of being a self-managed association which is organized horizontally, without an established leader/leader, by and for itself. Decisions are made by all the individuals constituting this entity (around 100), one vote is equal to one vote. In short, this operation requires a lot of discipline, initiatives, accountability, meetings and discussions in order to find consensus and evolve together. Any member of the association can propose an idea, have it validated by the association and carry out their project. The possibility for members to get involved and decide for themselves allows them to emancipate themselves and train for positions linked to the cultural sector. With more than a hundred events per year, the Zoo attracts tens of thousands of partygoers, artists, curious people, tourists and expats. The regular audience comes from all over Switzerland but also from France (Lyon, Grenoble, Chambéry, Lake Geneva) and Italy (Milan, Turin). The types of audiences are as eclectic as the music played. The Zoo brings together all the musical communities that sometimes rarely meet: techno, bass music, dub, psytrance, acidcore etc.
